lighting

Lighting accounts for between 20% and 40% of electricity used in the commercial and industrial sector. Replacing older lighting systems with more modern systems with appropriate controls can realise substantial cost and environmental savings.

There are three main types of lighting:

  • Tungsten incandescent filament lamps
  • Fluorescent lamps
  • Discharge lamps

Each has different characteristics and each is appropriate in different circumstances depending on cost, life, colour rendering, and efficiency. In the commercial sector fluorescent and discharge lamps are mainly used, as they are more efficient than incandescent lamps. Swapping older 38mm (1.5 inch) diameter fluorescent tubes with newer 26mm (1 inch) diameter tubes can cut energy use by 10%. Replacing old stop start fluorescent fittings with modern efficient fittings with high frequency ballasts will reduce energy use even further. In addition, high frequency fittings will reduce flicker and hum and extend lamp life with further savings.

A modern system of lighting controls ensures that lights are only used when required. These range from simple switches to more sophisticated automated controls such as presence detectors and photocells. Appropriate lighting controls can save both energy and money (up to 30%) and are a requirement of current Building Regulations.

We can provide help and advise on energy efficient lighting installations from site assessments and feasibility studies to detailed design and project delivery.
