solar electricity (PV)

Electricity can be generated directly from sunlight using photovoltaic materials - typically silicon. These systems are commonly called solar photovoltaic or PV. They are reliable and widely installed around the world.
You can buy PV systems as modules or tiles. Modules are sheets that can be fitted on top of an existing roof, and tiles replace your existing tiles. Modules are more efficient, but tiles can be more attractive. Both types of system have no moving parts, require minimal maintenance, and are easy to install.
To work effectively, solar PV systems need unshaded roofs, facing broadly south of due east or west. While orientation and angle of tilt will affect performance somewhat, as will your location, the most critical factor is avoiding shading from trees or chimneys if at all possible.
You are likely to need a system of 10 square metres or more to make a significant impact on your annual electricity need. You may also be able to sell electricity you generate back to the National Grid, although grid connection is not necessary: you may prefer to charge your own battery bank and use solar electricity as a self-contained backup power supply.
Solar PV systems are likely to cost of the order of £5000 upwards, net of grants (which can be substantial). However, this is a fast-developing technology and prices are coming down all the time. Our design tools, site assessments and evaluations from plans can provide a tailored estimate and specification for your property.
