You can now get sophisticated heating controls enabling you to dictate when and where your home is heated. This can make a big difference to your energy use, because they give you the ability to reduce energy wasted heating empty rooms.

Normal controls for wet heating systems will now include a programmable thermostat which will set the temperature you'd like the house at for different times during the day and week and thermostatic radiator valves that control radiators independently in individual rooms. More sophisticated systems can include motorized valves on individual radiators, controlled electronically, and zone controls.

Multiple zones are now encouraged by building regulations if your home is bigger than 150 sqm, which is a medium-large family home. This effectively means separate thermostats for different areas of the house, with independent control and heating loops.

A full set of controls will cost of the order of £100-£200 and can make a significant impact on your energy use (10-20%) although the impact will depend on your own discipline in using them.

Our design tools, site assessments and evaluations from plans will show you the potential impact of either a basic or more sophisticated control regime for your property in conjunction with other energy efficiency technologies.
