cavity wall insulation

Most houses built since 1930 have cavity walls, but they've only been insulated routinely since 1990. Uninsulated walls can let out around 35% of your heat, and lead to condensation problems.

You can usually tell if you have cavity walls if the brick pattern is all lengthways (i.e., you have no bricks visible end on). Where the wall has been insulated after the house was built you should be able to see the holes used by the installers to blow in the insulation material. You'll also come across the insulation when drilling into external walls - it's typically a foam or granular material.

Cavity walls are generally insulated with either mineral wool, foam, or polystyrene bead.

Our design tools, site assessments and evaluations from plans will provide cost and carbon payback comparisons for your property between natural, man-made and the cheapest available materials, and for insulating to building regulations or to a higher eco-specification in conjunction with other energy efficiency technologies. Cavity wall insulation is an easy and non-disruptive technology to fit, and usually subsidised.
